What is Radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless, naturally occurring radioactive gas produced by the decay of uranium and radium. It is found in soils, rock, and water throughout the United States.
Why is Radon dangerous?
Radon is recognized as a Class A Carcinogen. Exposure to it causes approximately 21,000 deaths due to lung cancer each year. A carcinogen is any substance, radionuclide, or radiation that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer.
“Indoor radon is the second-‐leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the county. It’s important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-‐established venting techniques.” – U.S. Surgeon General.
Can the same person test and mitigate a home?
Only if that person is the resident, if the person provides measurement or mitigation services, the answer is “No.” 32 Illinois Administrative Code 422 prohibits licensed measurement and mitigation at the same address by the same practitioner.
What is mitigation?
By definition in the 32 Illinois Administrative Code 422, Licensing of Radon Detection and Mitigation Services, “mitigation” means the act of repairing or altering a building or building design for the purpose in whole or in part of reducing the concentration of Radon in the indoor atmosphere.
How does an estimate work?

What is the action level?
To combat the health risks associated with radiation exposure, the US EPA set 4.0 pCi/L as the action level. In other words, it is the level at which people are recommended to take corrective measures to reduce radon levels indoors. The 4.0 pCi/L Action Level does not imply that any level below 4.0 pCi/L is considered acceptable. It is recommended that Americans consider fixing their homes for radon levels between 2 pCi/L and 4.0 pCi/L.

Yes! MK Radon Specialists has completed the necessary education, testing, and licensing requirements as set forth in 32 Illinois Administrative Code 422. MK Radon Specialists holds the following licenses from the State of Illinois IEMA Division of Nuclear Safety: Radon Measurement Professional and Radon Mitigation Professional.
